P.A. Lucas & Co appointed to oversee restructuring of heritage Australian manufacturer

A.H. Beard Pty Ltd, one of Australia’s longest-running mattress manufacturers, entered voluntary administration on 30 April 2026, with Peter Anthony Lucas and Damien Lee Hou Lau of P.A. Lucas & Co appointed as administrators to oversee a restructuring of the business.
The appointment places a 126-year-old, family-owned manufacturing group into external control after a prolonged period of financial strain, marking a significant moment for a company that has operated continuously since its founding in 1899 and remained under five generations of Beard family ownership.
A.H. Beard built its position as a premium bedding manufacturer with a substantial domestic production footprint, supplying major Australian retailers and maintaining export channels into international markets. At its peak, the business was capable of producing up to 10,000 mattresses per week and had sold more than 10 million units over its history. It is currently supported by a workforce of approximately 340 employees in Australia and a smaller presence in New Zealand.
The company’s financial deterioration reflects a convergence of structural and cyclical pressures facing Australian manufacturers. Management identified a sustained contraction in discretionary consumer spending, intensified competition from lower-cost imported products, and a sharp escalation in manufacturing input costs as key drivers of declining performance. These pressures were compounded by several years of operating losses and declining revenue, eroding liquidity and limiting the group’s ability to sustain its existing cost base.
Despite the appointment, the business is expected to continue trading during the administration period, with no immediate changes flagged to staffing levels or supply chain arrangements, as the administrators assess restructuring pathways. The process is likely to focus on stabilising operations while exploring options that may include a recapitalisation, sale of the business, or other restructuring outcomes aimed at preserving value in the underlying manufacturing platform.
