Award-winning rum distiller Brix enters voluntary administration

Sydney Distilling Co Pty Ltd, trading as Brix Distillers, has entered voluntary administration, with Ben Carson and Richard Stone of RSM Australia Partners appointed as joint and several voluntary administrators on 21 January 2026.
The Sydney based business, founded in 2017, operates Australia’s first dedicated craft rum distillery, combining production facilities with a cellar door and bar in Surry Hills. Brix built its profile in the premium spirits market through locally-produced, barrel-aged rum and a series of domestic and international awards.
In a statement following the appointment, Carson said the administrators are undertaking an urgent review of the company’s financial position and assessing all available restructuring options, including a sale of assets or a recapitalisation through a deed of company arrangement.
“Our priority is to explore every available option to achieve the best possible outcome for creditors while also preserving the opportunity for the continuation of a legacy Australian distillery brand,” Carson said.
A formal sales and expressions of interest process has commenced, with non binding indicative offers sought within a short timeframe as the administrators test market interest alongside restructuring alternatives. The administrators have confirmed they are already in discussions with multiple interested parties regarding the future of the business, brand, and underlying assets. A key attraction, according to the administrators, is Brix’s substantial inventory of maturing Australian rum, described as one of the largest private holdings of its kind in the country, which may appeal to both wholesalers and strategic buyers seeking immediate access to aged stock.
The first meeting of creditors is scheduled for 3 February 2026.
