BlackMilk Clothing enters voluntary administration as administrators launch sale process

17-year-old fashion brand continues trading as Apex Advisory seeks buyer capable of moving quickly

Black Milk Clothing Pty Limited, trading as BlackMilk Clothing, the Brisbane-based fashion retailer known for its alternative designs and pop culture collaborations, has entered voluntary administration, with Adam Lee Johnston of Apex Advisory appointed as administrator on 4 November 2026. The appointment has triggered an accelerated sale process aimed at finding a buyer for the 17-year-old business, which continues to trade and fulfil customer orders while administrators assess its future.

Founded in 2009 by James and Linda Lillis, BlackMilk developed from a small Brisbane operation into an internationally recognised online fashion retailer, attracting a dedicated following through its distinctive leggings, original designs and licensed collections featuring major entertainment franchises. The company operates a direct-to-consumer business serving customers in more than 48 countries and has a combined social media audience exceeding 1.9 million followers.

The administration follows several years of operational restructuring as the company sought to address declining consumer demand, rising operating costs and increasingly difficult international trading conditions. Earlier this year, BlackMilk closed its remaining Australian manufacturing operations and shifted production overseas, ending a longstanding component of its business model. The closure of its Brisbane factory affected 15 production employees.

Chief executive Jackie Kruger said the company had also invested in rebuilding its technology and ecommerce infrastructure, reducing its cost base and changing its operating model in an effort to improve financial sustainability. Despite those measures, the business continued to face financial pressure.

Linda Lillis confirmed that employees remain in place and that trading is continuing under the administrators' control. She said the administration was intended to provide an opportunity to determine whether the business could continue under new ownership or through another restructuring outcome.

Apex Advisory has commenced an accelerated sale campaign targeting established fashion retailers, ecommerce operators, strategic purchasers and investors with experience in consumer businesses. Proposals may be submitted for the business as a going concern or for individual assets, with any transaction subject to the administration process and applicable approvals.

The administrators are seeking parties capable of progressing a transaction quickly, pointing to the company's established brand recognition, international customer base and direct-to-consumer infrastructure as potential sources of value for an acquirer.
