After years of restraint, Tax Office ramps up travel bans on major debtors

Carla Hildebrandt of WAtoday shares that the ATO has sharply increased its use of departure prohibition orders against major tax debtors, issuing 21 travel bans since July 2025 as part of a broader enforcement push to protect public revenue, recover unpaid superannuation, wages and GST, and reduce its $50 billion collectable debt book alongside director penalty notices, garnishees, wind-up applications and credit reporting referrals.
