Cocos Islands Co-Operative Society - Voluntary Administration

Cocos Islands Co-Operative Society, the largest employer on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands located in the Indian Ocean about 3,000 km northwest of Perth (closer to Indonesia than Australia), entered voluntary administration on 25 September.

The cooperative is the commercial arm of the Cocos Malay community, employing approximately 74 people and operating the Cocos Beach Resort, Cocos Beach Motel, Tropika Restaurant, Cocos Co-Op Society and Home Island Hardware.

The cooperative is also responsible for various services on the island, including logistics, freight, hospitality, and infrastructure, some of which have reportedly been halted as the cooperative struggles to pay down a $18 million tax debt.

Jeremy Nipps and Thomas Birch of Cor Cordis were appointed voluntary administrators.
