Essential Caravans enters administration as manufacturer pursues restructuring

Victorian caravan maker closes Somerton factory and cuts jobs as management seeks to preserve the business through a DOCA and a shift to imported vehicles

Essential Caravans Pty Ltd, a Victorian caravan manufacturer that has produced more than 7,000 vehicles since its establishment in 2015, entered voluntary administration on 21 October 2026, with Paul Allen and Glenn Franklin of PKF Melbourne appointed as joint administrators.

The appointment follows an operational restructuring that saw the company close its manufacturing facility in Somerton, in Melbourne's northern suburbs, and consolidate production with sister company Design RV at a facility in Pakenham. The closure affected 92 employees, 12 of whom accepted positions at Pakenham, while dozens of contractors also lost work.

Director Jamie Johnson attributed the company's financial difficulties to deteriorating conditions in Australia's caravan manufacturing sector, including declining demand and growing competition from imported vehicles. He told the ABC News that the company's two Victorian factories were operating at approximately one-third of their previous production capacity, making it uneconomic to maintain both facilities.

Johnson said he intends to continue trading the Essential Caravans brand through a deed of company arrangement (DOCA), with a business model increasingly focused on importing caravans from China rather than domestic manufacturing.

The administrators and management are reviewing outstanding customer orders and delivery schedules, with the company stating that it intends to fulfil all existing orders and honour outstanding warranty obligations. The extent of the company's liabilities has not yet been disclosed.

The administration comes amid mounting pressure on Australia's caravan manufacturing industry, which has experienced several significant insolvencies over the past year, including Zone RV, Australian Off Road, Sunland RV, Network RV Group and Maverick Campers.

Johnson was also involved in the acquisition of Queensland manufacturer Zone RV following its collapse with approximately $42 million in liabilities. Zone RV's new owner, Adventure Zone RV, has confirmed that it operates independently of Essential Caravans and is unaffected by the administration.
