Report warning: Gas-led Whyalla Steelworks transition a $2bn taxpayer ‘Santos subsidy’

In other GFG news, a new Climate Energy Finance report warns that a gas-led revival of the Whyalla Steelworks, now in administration with more than $1.3 billion owed to creditors, would require up to $2 billion in public subsidies that risk locking the asset into high-cost methane infrastructure and effectively operating as a multibillion-dollar taxpayer subsidy to South Australian oil and gas giant Santos rather than supporting a genuine green steel transition.
