Shaky foundations: Bathla’s downfall is one of many warning signs for Australia’s construction industry

Bathla Group’s administrators have told creditors the developer owes about $3.4 billion, including roughly $40 million in unpaid wages and superannuation, and are seeking urgent funding from five lenders to keep parts of the business operating and continue construction on an estimated 2,000 to 2,500 homes, against a backdrop of more than 7,000 construction company insolvencies nationally since 2024.
