Truck driver shortage looms as industry looks to refresh an aging workforce

Australia’s road transport sector, which moves about 75% of the nation’s freight, is facing a deepening driver shortage of roughly 28,000 positions, forecast to blow out to 78,000 by 2029 as an aging workforce, regulatory pressures, and weak entry pathways deter new entrants, raising cost, capacity, and supply-chain risk across the economy.
